Scholarly writing is usually analysis written by scholars/professionals in the field. For example, a scholarly article in history is an anlysis written by a historian. Usually scholarly articles are published in academic and scholarly journals. When searching library databses, use the search tools to limit to "scholarly" and/or "peer reviewed."
Journalistic writing tells the story of what happened and is written by a journalist or a reporter. Think newspaper articles, or those found in news magazines. Journalistic writing can be found in other sorts of publications as well, so be sure you carefully consider the item and not just the publication in which you found it.
